Flights from Penang, Kuching & Kota Kinabalu to China

Best connected — Penang (PEN)Direct flights to Guangzhou (China Southern, Scoot, Sichuan Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, AirAsia, China Eastern — around 4 hours), plus Spring Airlines nonstop to Shanghai Pudong (daily since 30 Jan 2026, ~5h50m). Spring has also talked about Guangzhou and Chengdu; that trade-press page still says those launch dates are being finalized. Qingdao Airlines Qingdao–Penang from 31 Mar 2026, and Chongqing Airlines Chongqing–Penang from 8 Apr 2026 (Tourism Malaysia).

Best connected — Kota Kinabalu (BKI)Spring Airlines resumed daily nonstop Shanghai service on 28 January 2026. Tourism Malaysia also lists direct scheduled flights from Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Kunming, Ningbo, Fuzhou and Shantou (Hong Kong is listed separately), with frequencies from several-weekly to daily. That release names AirAsia and Xiamen Airlines on the Sabah–China network — it is not a Shanghai–KK timetable, so pick the airline and time on the carrier site for your dates. Kota Kinabalu is one of the better-connected Malaysian cities for China routes outside Kuala Lumpur.

One direct route — Kuching (KCH)Batik Air's Guangzhou-Kuching route started 17 March 2026. A July 2026 local report said that by 6 June the route had run 22 round-trips, carried 5,892 passengers, and posted an 85% load factor — currently Kuching's only confirmed scheduled direct China route. A Shanghai-Kuching route has been discussed by a regional carrier but was not yet operating as of this check.

No direct China flights — Ipoh (IPH)Ipoh's Sultan Azlan Shah Airport has no scheduled direct flight to mainland China as of this check — it serves only a small number of destinations overall. Travelers from Ipoh typically connect via Kuala Lumpur or Penang.

Assuming Kuching has the same options as Penang or Kota KinabaluKuching currently has just one confirmed direct China route (Guangzhou), while Penang and Kota Kinabalu each connect to several Chinese cities. If you're departing from Kuching and your destination isn't Guangzhou, compare a Kuching-Guangzhou-then-domestic connection against flying via Kuala Lumpur first.
