Mainland tills show an Alipay or WeChat Pay QR. TNG’s travel page covers participating Alipay QRs only. Apple’s China Apple Pay page puts Visa/Mastercard-network Apple Pay outside mainland China.

Install the mainland Alipay app in Malaysia. Add Visa or Mastercard while you still have SMS and home banking.

If you already use WeChat, finish WeChat Pay’s card bind before you fly. Some shops only take that QR.

TNG eWallet: Scan to Pay, then scan the Alipay QR. TNG says overseas QR works at participating Alipay QR merchants (TNG: over 10 million), shows the rate before you pay, and quotes about 1% overseas QR fee. That is not every stall.

Google Pay and Apple Pay are not the QR a noodle stall shows. GrabPay and Boost are not a China till plan. Keep a small RMB float.

Background

Two different “Alipay” searches

Malaysian Google is full of “alipay malaysia”, “tng alipay” and “how to top up alipay in malaysia”. Those queries are mostly about using Alipay-related products inside Malaysia.

This page is only mainland China: restaurant, metro, convenience store.

The live bind path is inside the mainland Alipay app: Me → Bank Cards → Add. Limits sit on that screen.

WeChat Pay’s live path is in the WeChat app: Me → Pay → Wallet → Add a card. Finish it in Malaysia if you already use WeChat.

How to

Do this at home

Install the mainland Alipay app — App Store / Google Play listing for Alipay. Complete whatever identity step the current build asks. Do this on home Wi-Fi.

Bind Visa or Mastercard — In Alipay: Me → Bank Cards → Add. If your Malaysian bank blocks the first OTP, call the bank from Malaysia — that call is harder from a hotel in Xi’an.

Repeat in WeChat Pay if you already use WeChat — In WeChat: Me → Pay → Wallet → Add a card. One wallet is enough to eat; two wallets save you when one QR fails.

Malaysia-specific traps

Treating TNG Alipay in Malaysia as the China Alipay bindTNG’s Malaysia Alipay link and the mainland Alipay app are not the same product. TNG overseas QR is Alipay+ scan at participating Alipay QR shops. Binding a Visa or Mastercard to the mainland Alipay app is the broader till plan, including shops that only take WeChat Pay.

Planning the till on Google Pay or Apple PayA noodle stall shows an Alipay or WeChat Pay QR, not those wallets. Bind Alipay (and WeChat Pay if you already use WeChat) before you fly. Keep a small RMB float for stalls off Alipay+.

Binding after you landSMS OTP, bank app, and Alipay’s own pages can all misbehave on a new Chinese number or hotel Wi-Fi. Finish bind + a test charge in Malaysia.

FAQ

Payments from Malaysia

Can I use Touch ’n Go in China?

Yes at participating Alipay QR shops. TNG’s own travel page says TNG eWallet can scan those QRs through Alipay+: ringgit debit, rate shown before you pay, about 1% overseas QR fee. Bind a Visa or Mastercard to Alipay anyway — WeChat-only shops and stalls off Alipay+ still need the Alipay or WeChat app.

Is Alipay Malaysia the same as Alipay in China?

No. “Alipay Malaysia” in search is often the local company and Alipay+ / TNG links used inside Malaysia. Paying a Beijing noodle shop is the Alipay app for mainland China, with an international card bound.

How do I bind a Malaysian card to Alipay?

Install Alipay from the App Store or Google Play, finish the identity steps the current build asks, then Me → Bank Cards → Add a Visa or Mastercard. Limits and supported banks live in that screen this week — not in a 2023 screenshot. The longer English setup guide is Alipay for foreigners.

Does WeChat Pay work for Malaysians?

Yes as a second QR, if you finish WeChat Pay’s foreign-card path at home (Me → Pay → Wallet → Add a card). Some shops only take WeChat Pay. Full WeChat signup steps are on the English WeChat setup wiki.

Does GrabPay or Boost work at a China till?

Do not plan a China meal on GrabPay or Boost. Use Alipay or WeChat Pay with a bound card, and keep some cash RMB as a stall backup.

Does Google Pay or Apple Pay work in China?
