Qingdao — Airport to city

Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) sits about 40 km from downtown. The cheapest way in is Metro Line 8 — it reaches the terminal directly, then a same-platform transfer to Line 3 at Qingdao North takes about 70 minutes for roughly ¥7–8. Taxis run by meter; the terminal even has its own high-speed rail station underground. Here is each way in, with real fares and the signs to follow.

Fare & cautions

  • Exact fares and departure times are not published here — check 12306 (the official China Rail booking app/site) before you plan around this option.
  • This line runs far less frequently than the metro — it is not a turn-up-and-go service, so do not assume a train will be available immediately after you land.

Official taxi

Late or night arrival, heavy luggage, family, a hotel far from the metro

Fare & cautions

  • Standard flagfall is ¥10 for the first 3km; the premium tier is ¥12 for the first 3km.
  • A night surcharge (22:00–05:00) adds ¥0.4/km, roughly 20–30% more than the daytime fare.
  • This airport is about 40km from downtown, and there is no reliable single downtown fare — treat the meter, or the ride app's live quote, as the real number.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Not yet. Metro Line 8 reaches the terminal directly at 胶东国际机场站, but there is no one-seat ride downtown — you must transfer to Line 3 at Qingdao North Station, a same-platform transfer. A southern extension of Line 8 targeting late 2026 will eventually offer a direct ~50-minute ride from downtown (五四广场), but it is not open yet.

There is no reliable single downtown fare — treat the meter as the real number. This airport sits about 40km from downtown. There are two fare tiers (standard ¥10 flagfall/3km, premium ¥12/3km) plus a night surcharge of ¥0.4/km from 22:00–05:00.

Yes. Qingdao Airport Station (青岛机场站) is built directly under the terminal, with ticketing and the concourse on GTC level B1 and platforms on B2 — it is China's first underground high-speed rail station. Through-trains run to Qingdao Railway Station (青岛站), Qingdao North Station (青岛北站), and Qingdao West Station (青岛西站). Exact fares and departure times are not published here — check 12306, since this line runs far less frequently than the metro.

No. Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) opened on 12 August 2021 and replaced the old Liuting Airport (IATA QDT), which is now closed. If a guide mentions Liuting or QDT, it is describing the old, no-longer-operating airport — this page covers the current Jiaodong airport only.

How we verify airport routes

  • We prefer airport, metro, rail, and government operator pages for route, ticketing, terminal, and schedule claims.
  • If an exact fare, pickup bay, or last-train time is not confirmed on an operator page, we tell travelers to check it instead of publishing a number.
  • Last-updated dates mark when source links and page claims were reviewed.
