Mainland filtering still sits in front of Google, Instagram and many news sites. App stores inside China may not offer the download.

On the ground

1
Download the app, create the account, and complete one successful connect in Malaysia.
2
Store the login somewhere that is not only Gmail in a browser.
3
Turn it on after landing only if the app you need is blocked. Alipay and WeChat do not need it.

Background

What a VPN is for on this trip

Malaysian travellers care about WhatsApp, Instagram, Google Maps/Gmail, and sometimes banking apps. Mainland China blocks a different set than a KL office firewall.

1
WhatsApp messages sometimes work on a well-routed eSIM and fail on a mainland SIM. Do not discover that in the taxi queue.
2
Apple has removed VPN apps from the China App Store in the past. That is why the download happens at home.

How to

Before the flight

Before the flight

1
Install on home Wi-Fi — Phone and laptop if you carry one. Sign in. Connect once. Disconnect. Confirm you can open it again offline.
2
Leave Alipay / WeChat / maps-of-China alone — Those are mainland apps. A VPN can make them worse. Use the VPN for the blocked Western apps, not for the cashier.

Watch for this

Wrong expectations

!
Buying a second eSIM because someone said “it has VPN”Routing claims are not a VPN product. Read the eSIM page. Keep a real VPN as plan B.

FAQ

VPN questions

Do I need a VPN in China if I already bought an eSIM?

Often yes for Google, Instagram, WhatsApp calling quirks, or Gmail in a browser. An eSIM gives a data pipe. International routing, if any, is a separate provider claim. Install a VPN in Malaysia before you fly.

Can I download a VPN after I land?

Do not plan on it. App Store listings for VPNs have been removed in China before. Download and log in on home Wi-Fi. Keep the app on the phone, not only in the cloud.

Which VPN is best for China from Malaysia?

YouChina does not rank VPN brands and has no VPN affiliate links. Use a product you can install and log into from Malaysia this week. Test WhatsApp and one Google property before you leave for the airport.
