First setup after arrival

Actual usage flow

1. Download & register → App Store / official page.

2. Open a Tour Card → passport + SMS in-app.

3. Top up → foreign card; the issuer may SMS-verify.

4. Pay in store: tap Pay & Collect / 收付款 to show your QR, or tap Scan / 扫一扫 to scan the merchant's QR. UnionPay QR is accepted at the large majority of Chinese merchants.

5. Pay at WeChat / Alipay QR: 云闪付 can also scan WeChat Pay QR codes in many places (互联互通).

6. Transit: UnionPay QR / contactless covers 46 city metros and 1,760 county bus networks; more than 30 cities let foreigners open a metro ride-code with a passport.

Where foreign tourists commonly get stuck

Most friction is language and the Tour Card step, not the core wallet. The app is China-oriented, so menus, verification prompts and error messages often appear in Chinese even though the store listing advertises English, Japanese and Korean. Plan the Tour Card before you travel and keep the Chinese terms handy. Where a merchant only accepts Alipay or WeChat, switch wallets rather than retrying UnionPay.
