High-speed rail, flight, or coach — how to choose

China's intercity system is organized around distance: short and medium hops go to high-speed rail, long hops or gaps in the rail network go to planes, and coach fills in short local routes HSR hasn't reached yet.

ModeBest forPrice feelBooking
High-speed rail (HSR)150–800 km between major hubs (≈3–4h on board)Beijing–Shanghai (1,318 km), 2nd class ≈ ¥553–69712306.cn official English site/app — passport only
FlightBeyond ~800 km, or wherever no direct HSR line existsBeijing–Shanghai from ≈ $85–106 one-way (cheap end)Trip.com or the airline site — passport only
Long-distance coachShort rural or mountain hops HSR hasn't reachedNo reliable national rate — ask at the station counterIn person at the station counter, passport as ID

Two worked examples: Chengdu–Urumqi (≈2,700 km, no direct HSR) is flight-only territory — a normal-speed train takes 27–35.5 hours versus a 3.5–4 hour flight. Beijing–Guangzhou (≈2,100–2,300 km) is closer to the tipping point — flying is faster door-to-door (≈7.5h total vs 9.5–13h by rail) but HSR is often the cheaper ticket.

Since 2019, China's Ministry of Transport bars newly approved cross-provincial coach routes over 800 km, and existing 800 km+ routes generally must stop once direct HSR opens between the same two cities — coach is a shrinking, rural-leaning option, not a default choice.

Between cities

High-speed rail

Book HSR tickets on 12306 with just your passport.

Next step

Book on 12306.cn's official English site or app using just your passport — no Chinese ID or agent required. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport, surname first.

When to choose it

Best for trips under about 800km between major cities — Beijing–Shanghai runs 4.5–7.5h, 2nd class ≈¥553–697 (verified 2026-07-12).

What can go wrong

Automated e-gates are inconsistent at reading foreign passports — use the manual verification lane instead. Carry-on is capped at length+width+height ≤130cm; there's no checked-baggage car.

Between cities

Domestic flights

Book a domestic flight with just your passport.

Next step

Book on Trip.com's English-language site or app with a foreign card — it typically adds a ¥20–50 service fee over the airline's base fare (verified 2026-07-12).

When to choose it

Best for trips over about 800km, or wherever no direct HSR line exists — Chengdu–Urumqi (≈2,700km, no direct HSR) is flight-only territory.

What can go wrong

Foreign passport holders commonly still need to collect a physical paper boarding pass at the airline counter — self-service kiosks are built around Chinese ID cards. Arrive 1.5–2h before departure, plus an extra hour during Chinese New Year or National Day.

Inside the city

Metro, taxi & apps

Metro covers the network; ride-hailing and the right apps cover the rest.

Ride-hailing

DiDi & Uber

Set up DiDi on the mainland, or Uber in Hong Kong.

Next step

Book through the DiDi mini-program inside Alipay — no separate Chinese phone number needed.

When to choose it

Best for door-to-door trips, heavy luggage or late at night — flagfall in Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou is ≈¥12–16 for the first 3km (verified 2026-07-12).

What can go wrong

Uber does not operate in mainland China. Hong Kong is the reverse — DiDi and Alipay ride-hailing don't run there, only Uber works.

Apps & public transit

Apps & Maps

Metro, buses and shared bikes all run on the same QR code.

Next step

Activate that city's transit QR code inside Alipay or WeChat Pay with a linked foreign card — it's activated per city, so reactivate it when you arrive somewhere new.

When to choose it

Best for everyday trips within a city — metro fares run ≈¥2–10, bus ≈¥1–3 (verified 2026-07-12).

What can go wrong

Google Maps does not work in mainland China — use Amap's English interface or Apple Maps instead. Every bag also goes through an X-ray scanner at the metro entrance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For most trips under about 800km between major cities, high-speed rail is faster door-to-door once you count airport transfer time, and the Beijing–Shanghai route (1,318km) runs in 4.5–7.5 hours. Beyond ~800km, or on routes with no direct HSR line — like Chengdu to Urumqi — flying wins clearly. On routes near the tipping point, like Beijing–Guangzhou, flying is faster overall but HSR is often the cheaper ticket.

Book directly on 12306.cn's official English site or app using just your passport — no Chinese ID or agent required. Enter your name exactly as printed on your passport, surname first. Foreign Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Diners Club cards are all accepted. There's no paper ticket: your passport itself is scanned at the boarding gate.

No — Uber sold its mainland China ride-hailing business to Didi in 2016 and does not operate there. Book rides through the DiDi app or the DiDi mini-program inside Alipay instead. Uber does operate in Hong Kong, which is outside mainland China's Didi-only landscape.

No — Google Maps does not function in mainland China (no live routing or directions). Use Amap (Gaode), which has had a full English interface since January 2025, or Apple Maps, which auto-switches to Amap's data once you're in mainland China with no VPN needed.

Activate that city's transit QR code inside Alipay or WeChat Pay (works with a linked foreign Visa/Mastercard/JCB/Diners card) and tap it at the gate. The code is activated per city, not nationwide, so reactivate it when you arrive somewhere new. Cash/token machines exist as a backup at most stations.

No. Booking DiDi through the mini-program inside Alipay reuses your existing Alipay registration and home phone number — no separate Chinese SIM is required for that route.

How we verify transport facts

  • We prioritize official operator, government (MOT, CAAC, 12306.cn) and platform (Apple, Amap) pages for fares, policy and mechanism claims.
  • Where an exact fare, fee or figure couldn't be confirmed on a primary source, we say so and tell you to check it on the spot instead of publishing a number.
  • Last-updated marks when source links and page claims were reviewed.
