Douyin (抖音) is the Chinese sister app of TikTok. It is one of the best ways to discover local hot spots, street‑food stalls, scenic viewpoints, and trending activities before you arrive — search city names in Chinese characters for the richest results.

Douyin works best if you set a few things up before you land in China.

Get the right app store

  • iOS: you need a China or Hong Kong Apple ID — the 抖音 listing won't appear on a US, UK, Japan or other store account.
  • Android: there is no Google Play build. Get it from douyin.com or a Chinese app store such as Huawei AppGallery or Xiaomi GetApps.

Expect a Chinese-only interface

  • Almost everything in the app is in Chinese. You'll get far more out of it if you can search by district or dish name — keep Pleco or a translator handy.

  • Watching and searching is open to everyone. Paying for group-buy vouchers sits behind real-name verification and a Chinese wallet, and foreign-card acceptance was not device-tested.

Step-by-step setup

1Install the official Douyin

- Search 抖音 in the App Store (about 1.4 GB) or open douyin.com on Android. The developer is Beijing Douyin Technology Co., Ltd., a ByteDance company.

  • Avoid TikTok (a separate international app) and avoid 抖音极速版 / 抖音火山版 — lite editions from the same maker.
2Browse before you commit

- Open the video feed and search the city or neighbourhood you're in. Short videos shot inside restaurants and shops tell you more than any menu.

3Save what you like

- Tap the bookmark on any video so it stays in your saved folder — handy later when Wi-Fi is weak.

4If you want to buy (optional)

- Link Alipay or a Chinese wallet and expect a real-name check. Treat any voucher as final sale until you've used it.

At a restaurant

  • Search the dish or restaurant name in Chinese and watch recent videos. Then show the address to a taxi driver or open it in Amap.

Spotting a trending spot

  • Type a neighbourhood name (for example 三里屯 or 外滩) and sort by recent. Locals post what's busy right now.

Using a group-buy voucher

  • Some videos link a voucher you redeem in the app. Redemption usually needs a Chinese wallet and real-name verification.

Troubleshooting — common problems and what to do

Common problems foreign visitors may run into

"The App Store says 抖音 isn't available in my country"
— You're signed into a non-China store. Sign out and into a China or Hong Kong Apple ID, then search 抖音 again.
"I can't read anything — it's all Chinese"
— Use your phone's Live Text or a translator on screenshots, or search by Chinese characters you copy from Pleco.
"A voucher won't let me pay"
— Vouchers are gated behind real-name verification and a Chinese wallet; foreign cards were not device-tested. Try Dianping or Meituan for the same deal.
"I downloaded the wrong app (TikTok / 极速版)"
— Uninstall it and get 抖音 by Beijing Douyin Technology from the official store or douyin.com.

Need to talk to a real person?

  • Douyin has in-app help but no reliable English support line for travellers. For a refund or dispute, go through the merchant or your card issuer, and keep screenshots of the order.

Your backup plan

For restaurant deals, use Dianping or Meituan — easier sign-up and the same discounts. For translation, keep Pleco installed.

Frequently asked questions about Douyin

Can I install Douyin from my home app store?
Not from most of them. The entry resolves on the China and Hong Kong storefronts, and lookups on the US, UK, Japan, Germany, France, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore storefronts return nothing.
Is Douyin just TikTok with a Chinese name?
No. They are separate apps from the same group; TikTok ships as com.zhiliaoapp.musically under TikTok Pte. Ltd., Douyin as com.ss.iphone.ugc.Aweme under Beijing Douyin Technology. Logins and merchants do not cross over.
Can I sign up with an overseas mobile line?
The registration screen does let you pick a country prefix, but press reporting says the identity check afterwards has no ordinary overseas passport option, so the profile stays limited. This project could not re-test it on a device.
Do I really need identity checking to buy a 团购 voucher?
For the government-funded discount campaigns, yes — the rules name a completed check as a condition. For ordinary merchant deals the platform terms require identity checking for core features, and checkout separately collects a true name and a document reference.
Will an overseas-issued bank instrument work at checkout?
Unconfirmed. The policy says the licensed provider collects a true name, a document reference, an instrument type and its digits, but no official text states which issuers clear. Blog write-ups claim workarounds exist; treat them as unverified.
Where do I complain if a merchant refuses my voucher?
In-app 我 → ≡ → 我的客服, or the maker's published lines — 95152 for general matters, 950525 for local services.
