Two separate issues: the ChatGPT site or app is widely reported as not reaching on a mainland line, and OpenAI’s Supported Countries list does not include mainland China.

What travelers get wrong
Pitfalls 1
Treating a VPN as OpenAI’s official repair
OpenAI Help never lists a VPN as the way to open ChatGPT.
The assumption was “the VPN that opens Instagram will make ChatGPT a supported service.” Those are different layers. Site or app reach is one issue. OpenAI’s list is another.

Copy the chats at home. Use a local assistant if you need AI on the trip.
Pitfalls 2
Treating an already-open session like Spotify
The assumption was “I signed in at home, so it will keep answering in Shanghai.” OpenAI Help still treats mainland China as outside the supported countries and territories.

Copy the chats at home. Do not plan ChatGPT as the in-China assistant.
Frequently asked questions
Does OpenAI’s list include Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Macao?
Taiwan is on the published ChatGPT Supported Countries list. Mainland China is not. Hong Kong and Macao do not appear on that same list.
What if I already have an account and I am only visiting?
OpenAI Help on travel: if you created the account in a supported country or region and you are now in a region it does not support, you may have trouble logging in to the account.
Are the network issue and OpenAI’s list the same thing?
No. Two separate issues. The ChatGPT site or app is widely reported as not reaching on a mainland line. Separately, OpenAI’s own supported-countries list does not include mainland China.
