Does ChatGPT work in China?
A double block — network restrictions plus OpenAI's own limits — and why setting up before you fly matters more here.
No — and it's a double block, not just one
ChatGPT is widely reported as blocked by China's network restrictions, and separately, OpenAI itself is reported to restrict service availability and new account sign-ups from mainland China. A VPN that helps with most other blocked apps may not fully solve access here — the safest plan is to have your ChatGPT account already signed in and working before you fly.
The details
Most blocked apps in mainland China face one obstacle: the network restriction. ChatGPT is reported to face two — the network block, plus OpenAI's own reported restrictions on service availability and account sign-ups from mainland China IP addresses.
A VPN can address the network-level block, but if OpenAI's own systems separately restrict access based on account region or signup origin, a VPN connection alone doesn't guarantee it resolves — this is reported to be inconsistent.
The most reliable approach reported by travelers is having an existing ChatGPT account already signed in and working on your device before you leave home, rather than trying to sign up or log in for the first time from inside mainland China.
Chinese AI assistants such as those from Baidu, Alibaba, and other local providers operate normally inside mainland China, though they're separate products with their own accounts, not a way to reach your ChatGPT conversations.
