Where foreigners get stuck

Linking is not the same as every payment succeeding
Official Alipay guidance supports linking eligible international cards, but a card issuer or a specific merchant flow can still decline.
Workaround: Finish setup before departure and keep another card plus some cash as backup.

Use the normal China Alipay app
Alipay, AlipayHK and Alipay+ are not interchangeable product names for this setup.

The amount, merchant and any fee shown in the app are the decision point for that transaction.

Can visitors link an international card?
Ant Group’s official traveler information says eligible international credit or debit cards can be linked directly to Alipay.
Should Alipay be my only payment method?
No. Keep a second card, WeChat Pay where available, and some RMB cash as backups.
