Taobao is China's biggest shopping app. A few things make ordering smooth for a visitor.

- Pay through Alipay, which handles the foreign-card side. Link your international card to Alipay first.

- Orders ship to a local address. Use your hotel's name and address in Chinese, or a consolidation warehouse.

1Install the official Taobao
- Search 淘宝 in the App Store or Google Play (free). The developer is Taobao (China) Software Co., Ltd. Avoid 淘宝特价版 (discount edition).
2Link Alipay
- In Taobao, choose Alipay at checkout. Taobao sees "Alipay"; your foreign card lives inside Alipay.
3Enter a delivery address
- Add your hotel address in Chinese (copy it from the hotel listing or ask the front desk). Save it for future orders.

Finding an item
- Tap the camera search and photograph anything. No Chinese typing needed.
Ordering to the hotel
- Most sellers ship within China in 2–7 days. Enter the hotel address and tell the front desk to watch for the courier.
Returns
- Returns are harder for foreigners. Check the listing's return policy and keep photos of any damage.
Troubleshooting — common problems and what to do
Common problems foreign visitors may run into
"Checkout won't accept my card"
— Taobao doesn't take foreign cards directly. Pay via Alipay with your linked international card.
"I installed the wrong app"
— You want the full 淘宝 with the orange cart icon, not 淘宝特价版.
"The courier can't find my hotel"
— Give the hotel's Chinese address and a local phone number; tell the front desk to expect a package.
Need to talk to a real person?
- Taobao has in-app customer service per order (Chinese only). For a chargeback, contact your card issuer with the order screenshot.
Your backup plan
JD.com and Pinduoduo are alternatives, but Taobao's image search is the easiest for visitors. For single items, ask the hotel concierge.
Frequently asked questions about Taobao
Can I use Taobao without a Chinese phone number?
You can browse and search without an account. Ordering needs a delivery address and a contact phone; whether an overseas number works for registration was not device-tested, and travelers report the code screen looping.
Is the app fully in English?
The App Store lists English for a named list of regions; the mainland experience is in Chinese, as the official listing images show. Full menu coverage was not device-tested.
Can I pay with a foreign credit card?
Taobao's own policy says orders settle through Alipay or WeChat Pay; paying a mainland order with a foreign card directly was not device-tested. Prepare Alipay as the likely rail.
Can I get it delivered to my hotel?
Yes, if you can give a Chinese address (hotel name, street, room) and a contact phone the courier can call. Some hotels refuse parcels; a Cainiao pickup station is the usual workaround.
What if the courier calls a number I do not have?
Route the parcel to a pickup station at checkout instead of your door — it is held there and released against a code, so no call is needed.
What if the hotel signed for my parcel and lost it?
Ask the desk to search their log by the order number, then open a dispute on the order; the platform's rules cover escalation of an unresolved case.
Can I return something after I leave the city?
The platform rules give a seven-day no-reason window from hand-over for eligible goods, but sending it back from outside the mainland is unconfirmed. Do not order anything you cannot receive before you move on.
Do I need real-name verification?
For normal shopping, an Alipay real-name step may appear; the platform agreement describes real-name verification via Alipay.
What is the difference between Taobao and Tmall / JD?
Taobao is the open consumer marketplace; Tmall is the brand flagship mall run by the same group; JD is a separate retailer. All are Chinese-address only.
