Shanghai — Airport to city

Shanghai has two airports on opposite sides of the city: Pudong (PVG), used by most international long-haul flights, and Hongqiao (SHA), used mostly for domestic and short regional routes. Fare & cautions

  • The fare to 南京东路 is ¥7; most other downtown stops on Line 2 cost about the same.
  • Trains start around 06:00. The last city-bound train leaves 浦东国际机场站 around 22:30 — a 23:31 service shown on some maps is the last train arriving at the airport, not a way into town, so don’t wait for it if you’re heading downtown.

Fare & cautions

  • The standard single fare is ¥50; with a same-day boarding pass it drops to ¥40; a round trip is ¥80.
  • The ride takes about 8 minutes at up to 300 km/h — the fastest way between Pudong Airport and 龙阳路, though you’ll still need a metro transfer or a taxi onward from there to reach downtown.
  • The operator fare page lists RMB 50 one-way (economy), 20% off with a same-day air ticket, and RMB 80 return. Reported hours run about 6:45–21:42 — confirm the last train at the ticket counter before you plan a late-night ride.

  • Travel guides report roughly ¥165–230 to 人民广场 (People’s Square), with the airport about 48 km away — the actual fare depends on traffic and your exact drop-off, so treat this as a range, not a quote.
  • Pay by the meter; Alipay/WeChat Pay QR codes and UnionPay cards are accepted, with cash as backup.

  • Hongqiao uses the same city-wide meter as Pudong: daytime flagfall ¥14 for the first 3 km, then ¥2.5–2.7/km from 3–15 km; night rates are higher.
  • 人民广场 is about 15 km from T1 and 18 km from T2, but reported fares vary widely — from roughly ¥63 up to ¥150 depending on the source — so watch the meter rather than expecting a fixed number.

Frequently asked questions

It depends which airport you land at. From Pudong (PVG), the fastest options are the Maglev to 龙阳路 (¥50, ~8 min) connecting to the metro, or Metro Line 2 direct to downtown (¥7, ~59 min to 南京东路). From Hongqiao (SHA), Metro Line 2 (board at T2, or transfer from T1) reaches 人民广场 in under an hour. Both airports also have official taxi ranks and airport buses.

Check your ticket's airport code. PVG (Pudong) handles most international long-haul flights; SHA (Hongqiao) handles most domestic flights and some short-haul regional routes. The two airports are connected directly by the Airport Link Line (opened December 2024, ¥26, under 40 minutes), so you can transfer between them without going into the city.

The operator lists ¥50 one-way, ¥40 with a same-day boarding pass (20% off), or ¥80 round-trip, for an 8-minute ride at up to 300 km/h to 龙阳路 station. It's the fastest link out of PVG, but you'll still need to transfer to the metro or a taxi from 龙阳路 to reach downtown. Confirm the last departure at the counter.

Yes. The Airport Link Line (机场联络线), opened 27 December 2024, connects Pudong Airport directly to Hongqiao Terminal 2 in under 40 minutes; the full airport-to-airport trip costs ¥26 — useful if your itinerary touches both airports rather than going straight into the city.

It matters. T1 (虹桥1号航站楼站) is served only by Line 10 — you’ll need to change at T2 for Line 2. T2 (虹桥2号航站楼站) has both Line 2 and Line 10, so board directly there and take Line 2 into the city for 人民广场 and other downtown stops.

From Pudong, travel guides report roughly ¥165–230 to 人民广场 (about 48 km); from Hongqiao, reports range more widely, roughly ¥63–150 (15–18 km), so treat both as estimates and watch the meter.
