Shanghai — Airport to city

Shanghai has two airports on opposite sides of the city: Pudong (PVG), used by most international long-haul flights, and Hongqiao (SHA), used mostly for domestic and short regional routes. Switch tabs below for the terminal, metro line, taxi rank and bus you’ll actually use at each one. An Airport Link Line also connects the two airports directly — details in each tab below.

One connecting line links both Shanghai airports

The Airport Link Line (机场联络线) runs Pudong Terminal 1&2 ↔ Hongqiao Terminal 2 directly in under 40 minutes across 7 stations. Fares start at ¥4 and the full airport-to-airport trip costs ¥26. Trains run about every 15 minutes; the official timetable updated 31 March 2026 lists the first Hongqiao T2 departure at 05:45 and the last Pudong T1&2 departure at 22:15 — opened 27 December 2024.

A 23:31 metro train shows up on some maps — it is not your way into town

Some maps still list a 23:31 Line 2 departure at 浦东国际机场站 — that train is arriving at the airport, not leaving it. The real last city-bound Line 2 train leaves 浦东国际机场站 around 22:30 (¥7 to 南京东路, trains from ~06:00) — don’t wait for the 23:31 service if you’re heading downtown.

Plan before you land

Which way into Shanghai from Pudong?

Pick by budget, luggage and arrival time — the Maglev is fastest to 龙阳路, Line 2 is the cheapest direct route downtown, and taxi or the airport bus suit heavy luggage or a hotel far from the metro.

Where & how to board

  • Board Line 2 at 浦东国际机场站, on B1 between T1 and T2 — follow the 地铁 / Metro signs from either arrivals hall.
  • Ride toward the city; the trip to 南京东路 runs about 59 minutes over 17 stops, with no transfer needed for most downtown stops such as 人民广场 and 静安寺.
  • Tap in with an Alipay/WeChat transit QR code, a Shanghai transit card, or buy a paper ticket at the machine.

Fare & cautions

  • The fare to 南京东路 is ¥7; most other downtown stops on Line 2 cost about the same.
  • Trains start around 06:00. The last city-bound train leaves 浦东国际机场站 around 22:30 — a 23:31 service shown on some maps is the last train arriving at the airport, not a way into town, so don’t wait for it if you’re heading downtown.

Fare & cautions

  • The standard single fare is ¥50; with a same-day boarding pass it drops to ¥40; a round trip is ¥80.
  • The ride takes about 8 minutes at up to 300 km/h — the fastest way between Pudong Airport and 龙阳路, though you’ll still need a metro transfer or a taxi onward from there to reach downtown.
  • The operator fare page lists RMB 50 one-way (economy), 20% off with a same-day air ticket, and RMB 80 return. Reported hours run about 6:45–21:42 — confirm the last train at the ticket counter before you plan a late-night ride.

  • Ignore anyone inside the terminal or at the curb who offers a ride, especially someone in a uniform who quotes a ‘peak-hour’ or ‘midnight’ surcharge before you’ve even reached the rank — that’s a common scam. The real fare only comes from the meter, at the official queue.

  • Travel guides report roughly ¥165–230 to 人民广场 (People’s Square), with the airport about 48 km away — the actual fare depends on traffic and your exact drop-off, so treat this as a range, not a quote.
  • Pay by the meter; Alipay/WeChat Pay QR codes and UnionPay cards are accepted, with cash as backup.

Ride-hailing (DiDi / Amap)

Where & how to board

  • Set your destination in DiDi before you walk out — DiDi has an English app that works with a foreign card, so it is the ride-hailing option most usable for visitors. Locals also use 高德地图 / Amap, but the domestic listing is Chinese-first; install the separate AMap Global edition for English.
  • Follow 网约车 / Ride-hailing signs from arrivals to the designated pickup area; the app assigns your exact bay — match it once you are outside.
  • Match the car plate to the app before you get in.

Fare & cautions

  • No fixed airport fare — the app quotes before you confirm, and it is usually close to the metered taxi price.
  • In-app payment; the quote, driver and plate appear after you land.

T1 and T2 use different metro lines — check before you walk

虹桥1号航站楼站 (T1) is served only by Line 10; 虹桥2号航站楼站 (T2) is where Line 2 meets Line 10. Landing at T1 and need Line 2? Ride Line 10 one stop to 虹桥2号航站楼站 and change there. Landing at T2, board Line 2 directly, eastbound toward 人民广场, 南京西路 and other downtown stops — ¥5, about 28 minutes to 人民广场.

The same Airport Link Line reaches Pudong from here

The Airport Link Line (机场联络线) also runs Hongqiao Terminal 2 ↔ Pudong Terminal 1&2 directly in under 40 minutes across 7 stations. Fares start at ¥4 and the full airport-to-airport trip costs ¥26. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It depends which airport you land at. From Pudong (PVG), the fastest options are the Maglev to 龙阳路 (¥50, ~8 min) connecting to the metro, or Metro Line 2 direct to downtown (¥7, ~59 min to 南京东路). From Hongqiao (SHA), Metro Line 2 (board at T2, or transfer from T1) reaches 人民广场 in under an hour. Both airports also have official taxi ranks and airport buses.

Check your ticket's airport code. PVG (Pudong) handles most international long-haul flights; SHA (Hongqiao) handles most domestic flights and some short-haul regional routes. The two airports are connected directly by the Airport Link Line (opened December 2024, ¥26, under 40 minutes), so you can transfer between them without going into the city.

The operator lists ¥50 one-way, ¥40 with a same-day boarding pass (20% off), or ¥80 round-trip, for an 8-minute ride at up to 300 km/h to 龙阳路 station. It's the fastest link out of PVG, but you'll still need to transfer to the metro or a taxi from 龙阳路 to reach downtown. Confirm the last departure at the counter.

Yes. The Airport Link Line (机场联络线), opened 27 December 2024, connects Pudong Airport directly to Hongqiao Terminal 2 in under 40 minutes; the full airport-to-airport trip costs ¥26 — useful if your itinerary touches both airports rather than going straight into the city.

It matters. T1 (虹桥1号航站楼站) is served only by Line 10 — you’ll need to change at T2 for Line 2. T2 (虹桥2号航站楼站) has both Line 2 and Line 10, so board directly there and take Line 2 into the city for 人民广场 and other downtown stops.

From Pudong, travel guides report roughly ¥165–230 to 人民广场 (about 48 km); from Hongqiao, reports range more widely, roughly ¥63–150 (15–18 km), so treat both as estimates and watch the meter. Both airports use the same city-wide tariff: ¥14 flagfall for the first 3 km, then ¥2.5–2.7/km up to 15 km and ¥3.6/km beyond, with higher night rates.

How we verify airport routes

  • We prefer airport, metro, rail, and government operator pages for route, ticketing, terminal, and schedule claims.
  • If an exact fare, pickup bay, or last-train time is not confirmed on an operator page, we tell travelers to check it instead of publishing a number.
  • Last-updated dates mark when source links and page claims were reviewed.
