Amap (Gaode Maps) is mainland China's most-used mapping and navigation app — built for local streets, public transit and ride-hailing that Google Maps doesn't cover well inside China. The edition foreign travelers actually need is a separate international listing, not the everyday domestic app most search results point to first.

What to know before you rely on Amap

1

The App Store and Google Play both list a separate edition called "AMap Global" — distinct from the everyday "高德地图" listing hundreds of millions of mainland users have. AMap Global is the one built for international travelers, and its App Store metadata officially declares English as a supported language. Searching just "Amap" in your home App Store can surface the domestic, Chinese-only listing first — look for "AMap Global" by AutoNavi Information Technology Co. Ltd. specifically.

2

Amap is built on China's native GCJ-02 map coordinate system, so pins and turn-by-turn routes are accurate without any workaround. This is the flip side of a problem YouChina documents on Google Maps in China: Google's China map tiles use the same GCJ-02 system, but live GPS position can still show shifted by up to a few hundred meters. Amap doesn't have that offset issue.

One traveler reported (X, June 2026) that the standalone Amap app would not finish account verification without a Hong Kong phone number when they tried to sync it with their Alipay+ setup. They ended up booking every ride through the Didi mini-program inside Alipay instead, and only later discovered that Alipay also has a Gaode (Amap) mini-program that handles ride-hailing directly — they kept using the standalone Amap app only to sanity-check fare estimates before booking elsewhere. This is a single report, not a confirmed policy, but it's a real fallback worth knowing if Amap's own sign-in wall blocks you.

Amap lets you download offline map data for specific regions before you fly. Coverage and how much of the app works offline is reported to vary by region and app version, so treat it as a backup, not a primary plan — verify what is actually cached for your itinerary inside the app before you lose a data connection.

Frequently asked questions about Amap

Very likely yes for turn-by-turn navigation and public transit. Google Maps' live navigation and transit data are widely reported to be unreliable inside mainland China, while Amap is built specifically for Chinese streets, subway systems and ride-hailing integration. Install it before you fly regardless of which app you plan to use as your primary map.

The "AMap Global" edition on the App Store and Google Play lists English as a supported language, and search accepts English input in most tourist cities. Coverage is reported as partial rather than fully English throughout the app, so verify the language setting once you open it.

Basic navigation and map browsing don't require one. Some account-linked features have been reported to hit a sign-in wall asking for a China or Hong Kong number — if that happens, the Didi and Gaode ride-hailing mini-programs inside Alipay are a practical fallback for booking rides.

Before you fly, especially on Android — Google Play is blocked inside mainland China, so Android travelers need every app installed ahead of departure. iPhone users can still reach the App Store after arrival, but downloading Amap and any offline map data in advance avoids relying on a data connection you may not have set up yet.

How we compare providers

  • We list eSIM providers that publicly advertise a China-mainland plan and either route through international gateways or document VPN-like behavior.
  • Prices, data caps and validity copy come from the provider's own product page. We mark every record with a "last checked" date and re-verify before each report cycle.
  • We never claim that a provider definitely bypasses China's firewall. We describe what the provider documents and what travelers consistently report. Travelers should still install a backup VPN before leaving home.
  • Affiliate status is disclosed on every commercial link. We do not change provider ordering for higher commission. Provider ranking is based on price, transparency, hotspot support and traveler feedback.
