Yes, a visitor with no Chinese can use it, and mostly without registering. Typed, camera and spoken translation open on first launch; Baidu's terms ask for a Baidu account only for part of the service, and the same terms confirm a free tier next to paid VIP tiers.

Before you install
- Check your phone can run itthe App Store listing shows version 12.5.0, dated 3 July 2026, and asks for iOS 13.0 or newer. An iPhone stuck on iOS 12 will not install it.
- Decide whether you want a Baidu account at allordinary travel use — typed, camera and spoken translation — runs without one. The terms request an account only for part of the service (some gated functions).
- Pull the offline packs at homeload the packs for your language pair while the connection is still fast; without them the typed and camera modes want a live link. A basement restaurant with no signal is exactly where you need the pack already loaded.
- Networkcamera and conversation modes need a live link at the moment of use; offline packs cover typed translation once loaded. Chinese-only Wi‑Fi (hotel, airport) is fine — Baidu answers on ordinary mainland networks.

Step-by-step setup
1Get the official app
Install the real Baidu Translate before you fly.
- iOS: App Store → search 百度翻译 or Baidu Translate → record id 605670941, published by Baidu.
- Android: the package com.baidu.baidutranslate was not found on the US Google Play storefront when checked, so use fanyi.baidu.com or a preinstalled Chinese handset store.
- Easy-to-mistake: Baidu's search app and keyboard carry the same wordmark and are not the translator.
2Open and set the language
The app opens straight into the input box; the account screen can be closed.
- Set the interface language: the store record declares English, and the switch sits in the profile tab under Settings; if your build stays Chinese, treat English coverage as partial and unverified.
- Pick the language pair: tap the two language chips above the input box and set your own language against Chinese.
3Allow camera and microphone
Photo mode and conversation mode request camera and microphone on first use; Baidu's privacy policy describes both.
4Load the offline packs
If you skipped that at home, do it on hotel Wi‑Fi before your first day out.
5Register only when a feature asks
A gated function is the moment a Baidu account becomes relevant; until then, stay unregistered.
Daily use — real scenarios
At a restaurant or shop
Camera tab, frame the dish list, read the overlay, then zoom on one line if the layout confuses it.
- Street stalls and curved signs: flatten the page, add light, frame one line at a time.
- Handwritten or decorative fonts may return nothing useful — type the characters instead.
Talking to a person
Conversation mode: speak your sentence, then turn the handset around for the reply.
- Background noise or a long sentence garbles the reply — move somewhere quiet and speak one short sentence at a time.
Show, don't speak
Type the sentence, translate it, and hold the Chinese result up to staff when the room is loud.
With no connection
Open the offline pack you loaded before the trip; typed translation then works unconnected.
When it fails
Use in-app feedback, then fall back to your spare translator or a written note.
Troubleshooting — common problems and what to do
Common problems foreign visitors may run into
"The interface opens in Chinese"
— The language switch is itself labelled in Chinese. Find it in the profile tab (person icon) → gear → language row → choose English. If the build stays Chinese, screenshot the menu and translate it with a second app.
"Camera output is nonsense"
— Handwriting, decorative font, glare or a curved surface. Flatten the page, add light, frame one line at a time; or type the characters by hand into the input box.
"Nothing translates offline"
— The language pack was never loaded. Reconnect, load the pack, then retest with the network off; keep a printed phrase card for the essentials.
"A feature suddenly asks me to sign in"
— That function sits behind a Baidu account. Stay on typed, camera and spoken modes, which do not need one; register through the overseas form only if you really need the extra.
"The verification message never arrives"
— Overseas numbers are accepted unevenly and this is not documented. Retry on another network, or skip registration altogether and use the app unregistered.
"Spoken reply comes back garbled"
— Background noise, dialect, or a very long sentence. Move somewhere quiet and speak one short sentence at a time; show the typed Chinese on screen instead.

Frequently asked questions about Baidu Translate
Do I need to register?
No for the everyday modes. Baidu's terms say an account is needed only for part of the service.
Does it work without a Chinese SIM?
Yes. Nothing in the terms ties basic translation to a mainland line, and offline packs remove the network question entirely.
Can I get it on Google Play?
Not at the checked date — the package was not found on the US storefront, so Android visitors go through Baidu's own domain.
Is there an English interface?
The App Store record declares English and Chinese. How completely English covers deeper screens is not device-tested here.
Is it free?
Baidu's terms describe part of the service as free and sell VIP tiers on top. Everyday travel translation sits in the free part.
Is it safe to translate private text?
Read this carefully: Baidu's terms state that what you type is not treated as your private personal data. Keep documents, health details and anything confidential out of it.
How accurate is it?
Baidu says results are machine-generated and gives no guarantee of correctness, so verify anything with legal or medical weight.
Does it beat Google Translate in China?
For reachability, yes, because it answers on ordinary mainland networks; quality comparisons are traveller opinion, not a measured fact.
