Is Alipay Tour Pass discontinued — what replaced it?
A freshness check on an area many older guides get wrong — hedged where we couldn't independently verify.
Widely reported as wound down — the confirmed current path is direct card binding
Tour Pass was a prepaid wallet product built for short-term visitors, and it's widely reported by travel guides and users to no longer be the recommended route. What we can confirm directly: Alipay currently supports linking an international Visa/Mastercard (and other major networks) straight to your account — see our full Alipay setup guide for the up-to-date steps.
The details
Tour Pass was a prepaid-wallet mini-program inside Alipay, built specifically for short-term foreign visitors who didn't have a way to link a regular bank card. It had its own balance cap and expiration window.
Multiple travel guides and user reports describe Tour Pass as wound down or no longer the recommended path for new visitors, in favor of direct card binding. We could not independently confirm an exact discontinuation date from Alipay's own materials, so treat 'discontinued' as widely reported rather than a fact we've verified first-hand.
Directly linking an international card (Visa, Mastercard, and other major networks) to your Alipay account is the setup route described on our own Alipay-for-foreigners guide, and it's what we recommend verifying and using today.
Treat any article describing Tour Pass as the current setup method with caution — this is a fast-changing area, and older guides are a common source of outdated advice. Check our up-to-date Alipay setup guide instead.
